If you’re the parent of a medically complex child, leaving the house can feel like preparing for a small expedition. It’s not just grabbing your keys and heading out the door. It’s medications, emergency equipment, feeding supplies, backup supplies, documentation, and a hundred other little things that you really don’t want to forget once you’re already halfway to your appointment. For many families like ours, even a simple outing can take a lot of preparation. And when we’re not prepared, it can take a lot out of us! The answer- preparing a Go Bag!
Why a GO Bag Matters
When your child has complex medical needs, being prepared isn’t optional — it’s essential.
Whether you’re heading to a doctor’s appointment, therapy, school, or even just the grocery store, having a well-packed “GO Bag” can mean the difference between a smooth outing and a stressful or even dangerous situation.
Many parents of medically complex kids carry supplies for things like:
- Trach care and suction equipment
- Feeding tube supplies
- Medications and emergency medications
- Ventilator or respiratory equipment
- Backup supplies in case something fails or gets contaminated
And when you’re juggling all of that, it’s incredibly easy to forget something important.

A Lesson We Learned the Hard Way
Like many families, we’ve had moments where we thought we packed everything… only to realize later that something important was missing.
Maybe it was a medication that got left on the counter.
Maybe it was a backup piece of equipment we assumed was already in the bag.
When you’re managing a lot of moving pieces, things slip through the cracks — especially when you’re tired or rushing to get out the door.
That’s exactly why having a consistent checklist can make such a big difference.
A Few GO Bag Tips That Help Us
Over time, we’ve learned a few simple habits that make outings a lot less stressful.
1. Keep a dedicated GO Bag packed at all times.
Instead of packing from scratch every time you leave the house, keep a bag ready to go and restock it when you return home.
2. Pack backups of critical supplies.
If something is essential to your child’s safety, having a backup can bring huge peace of mind.
3. Use a checklist before leaving.
Even experienced parents forget things sometimes. A quick checklist helps make sure nothing gets overlooked.
